- Let me preface this by saying I have been using the regular plastic washers that came standard with whatever drain pipe and never had a problem a little re-tightening couldn’t fix for the past 25 years. They have lasted for years with traps being disassembled and reassembled for periodic clean-outs. It really seems like if you have a leaking tailpiece using a standard plastic washer something must not be lining up right or there’s a flaw in the material the washer is mating.That being said… Standard old plastic vs. fancy colored rubber seals with letters telling me how high tech the rubber is? Please. Like I’m not going to buy these instead. TPR is thermoplastic rubber guys. Elastomeric polymers with viscoelasticity. Removing my stupid broken garbage disposal and redoing all the nasty old pipes while I’m down there just went from “please kill me” to “almost tolerable” because now we have some sexy aftermarket seals going in.In all seriousness these worked great. Used these and their slipjoint counterparts from end to end. They made nice snug seals that felt very strong but yet had a little flex to them. So I could see these being a little more forgiving than plastic, having a wider tolerance for making a good seal if things weren’t lined up just right. I personally wouldn’t need them for that reason because when I do a job everything is dead on point, plumb, square, and true. I just like the idea of using the best materials for the job. As far as the rubber being as quality as it sounds on paper and not drying out only time will tell. But my first impression is these are very nice seals.For anyone looking at these to deal with some cattywompused plumbing, the newer polypropylene drain pipe feels a little more bendy and elastic than PVC so that may be another thing to consider working into the mix.
